Writerly Things…10/8/17

Traci Kenworth

Halloween month is always fun for me. Originally, I wanted to write scary stories but I’ve found over time that I’m more pulled to fantasy. There are scary elements to my stories and occasionally I do pen the full genre but I find I’m less drawn to it than previously. Maybe it was because I worked out a lot of darkness over the years in my early writing and now that I’m in a calmer place, my stories lend to the fantasy more.

I’m not saying I’ll never write scary again. I do love the genre! For now, though, my stories like just a shadow of scariness thrown in, sometimes a little more if I’m dealing with a battle or monster. Yes, monsters can be in fantasy too. Look at Lord of the Rings or even George R.R. Martin’s works. There’s something about that tad of creepiness that seeps into one’s work sometimes.

At home, we’re planning a Halloween marathon as we call it. We watch scary movies, eat some spooky food and treats, drink a little black punch… It’s all good. Do you have any Halloween plans this year? Do you write scary stories? What are your favorite scary movies? Books?

For movies, I like monsters better than psychos (too close to reality for me). A few: The Mummy movies (haven’t seen the new and don’t plan to), Jurassic Park movies, and Pirates of the Caribbean (the first movie). Books I like: The Stand, It, Salem’s Lot, Watchers, Lightning, Darkfall, Bethany’s Sin, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Haunting of Hill House, and Took.

Have a great week, take care, and God bless!
