Writerly Things…4/8/18

Traci Kenworth

Well, Spring continues to show itself. My daffodils are blooming, and I have signs of one tulip at the moment. I know, I need to replant. The poppies are coming in and the flags are peeking through. Bunnies and squirrels are abundant. Unfortunately, we’ve picked up a gopher around our home. There’s a tomcat trying to fend it off, but I’m going to have to take measures to get the gopher away as it is hiding in our crawlspace and I’m worried at the damage it may do down there. It is probably the same gopher that put holes throughout my yard last summer. I think it is more frequent because of all the wood leftover from last year’s storms.

I’ve had a cold the past week, so I didn’t get as much time in to do things like writing and the blog. I got some progress done on the writing, just not as much as I would’ve liked. Right now, I’m struggling with writing a sex scene or not. Although, I think I’m going to make this a sweet romance. I find I’m a bit too embarrassed to do otherwise, lol. Maybe this is the better way to go anyway with what I hear about Amazon pulling romances and erotica off the site with this sex predator online bill. I think it’s a shame that it’s happening to these books. A lot of readers like them and I don’t see anything wrong with them. I used to read romance books when I was like eight. At times, they were the only books in the house. Although, admittedly, I haven’t tried erotica. I prefer the tamer versions of romance.

I’m learning loads in my research for HA! I’ve also devised a list of things when my beta comes back to work on. It’s a never-ending cycle of projects but I love it! Well, at least, it will be until their published!

I watched the podcast with Joanna Penn and Jane Friedman yesterday on the business of writing. I’ve got to say, a lot of good information. I’m sorry to say that I was naïve when it came to this business when I started out. I thought all I had to do was write books, lol. It’s a whole lot more than that and from what I learned from a Damon Suede blog post as well yesterday, it always has been more than that. The author can’t rely on the publisher to do everything. Marketing has to take place whether you go traditional or Indie. They (Joanna and Jane) talked a little about business models. I’m going to have to pick up a copy of this book. I need to bring a little business to my way of doing things in the future. I don’t want to not know about how to manage things. I’ve been in the dark for a while now but podcasts, Indie news, and Kristin Kathryn Rusch’s posts have been educating me.

How has your week/end been? And your projects? Have a great day, take care, and God bless!

      1. I try to be but I’m not sure that I know a smidge of what’s necessary yet. I’m thinking of picking Jane Friedman’s new book up in a few weeks or so. It’s about The Business of Being a Writer.
