Soldier. Summoner. SaintThe nation’s fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.

The Darkling rules from his shadow throne while a weakened Alina Starkov recovers from their battle under the dubious protection of the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Now her hopes lie with the magic of a long-vanished ancient creature and the chance that an outlaw prince still survives.

As her allies and enemies race toward war, only Alina stands between her country and a rising tide of darkness that could destroy the world. To win this fight, she must seize a legend’s power―but claiming the firebird may be her ruin.

My Review: Some spoilers.
Alina and Mal haunt the White Chapel of the Apparat. He keeps Alina a virtual prisoner, not allowing anyone to interact with Sankta Alina. She knows he wishes her to die so her Sainthood could be used even further. However, Mal and the other Grisha have a plan and risk much to free Alina and themselves from the Apparat. She regains her strength and orders the Apparat to look after her people and leaves for the surface with the Grisha and Mal. Reaching it after much chaos, they are discovered by the Soldat. Nicholai rescues them, and they head for the Spinning Wheel where they find the King and Queen is residence. After the King learns Genya is with them, he tries to have her killed but Nicholai steps in and manipulates things until the King is overthrown and he takes over the throne. One of their own betrays them and soon the Darkling attacks with his nichevo’ya and Nikolai is turned to a monster and the Grisha scattered. Thus, begins their search for the firebird and their last hope against the Darkling.

Amazing! LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! The characters draw you into their heartbreak and the search for a way to defeat the Darkling. I had heard that there was a point in the book which caused some readers to throw the book across the room. I didn’t, however. I sort of guessed what was about to happen and read through with delight. I thought the ending was the best I’ve ever read. It’s not all sunlight and bows but that’s what makes it amazing! Kudos to Leigh Bardugo for a fantastic, gripping book that was true to the series!
