Book Talk…2/22/19 Ten Writing Tips by Michael David Wilson and Bob Pastorella

Book Talk…2/22/19 Via This is Horror Podcast Patreon Writer’s Advice ebook Review of Ten Writing Tips

Traci Kenworth

Authors: Michael David Wilson and Bob Pastorella

My Review: The ebook is only available to Patreon members of a certain tier at the This is Horror Podcast website. It’s titled Ten Writing Tips. I’m going to use the end quote of the ebook as I think it tells the story behind why we writers write:

“We who make stories know that we tell lies for a living. But they are good lies that say true things, and we owe it to our readers to build them as best we can. Because somewhere out there is someone who needs that story. Someone who will grow up with a different landscape, who without that story will be a different person. And who with that story may have hope, or wisdom, or kindness, or comfort. And that is why we write.”

Neil Gaiman

The ebook points out the ten most known writing tips and the opinions on each tip by both Michael David Wilson and Bob Pastorella. Although, I agree with Michael on his advice, my writing style seems more similar to Bob’s. I find myself writing either early in the morning, the afternoon, or sometimes evening. In short, whenever I can. I don’t write every day as I take the weekends off. Now, that doesn’t mean I don’t do some writerly things, such as blogs, listening to podcasts, etc. But my writing days on M-F, if I can. The majority of the time I write all five because I find that practice does keep me going forward. The two days off though, definitely rest me and give me a bounce to get back into things. I definitely recommend becoming a Patreon as they have such a wonderful podcast. They interview authors and it is primarily focused on horror, of course but there are tips even other genre writers can pick up. They have had such greats as Ramsey Campbell, Charlaine Harris, and Joe Hill to name a few. Their roster is loaded with many more guests I haven’t been able to listen to but every week it seems they do a podcast or two and then there’s also a behind the scenes, on-camera podcast with Michael and Bob where they talk craft, answer questions, and talk about where they’re going with their work and the podcast itself. I am very happy to have discovered them and I’m also pleased to support them in their endeavors. Here’s their link or you can look on the Patreon page for them:

I have discovered many new horror writers through them. For instance, Gemma Files’ Experimental Film comes from their recommendation and I’m currently reading Karen Thompson Walker’s The Dreamers which is about a sleeping sickness devastating a college campus and small town. Very, very good!
