Writerly Things 9/9/19 How to Turn Excuses into Pluses

Do you find yourself making excuses as to why you can’t write? This is for you.

Excuses Don’t Help Anyone.

There’s no need to feel guilty if you can’t write some nights. Or days. It happens to everyone. We get too busy, there’s too much on our plates. Instead of berating ourselves, we should be merciful and move on. I’m not saying to shirk your writing but if you have to do something else, do it. We waste too much time with negativity in our lives. It’s time to change that way of thinking. If you can’t do it today, get to it tomorrow.

Shorten Your Time if You Have to.

You don’t necessarily have to write for hours and hours. Ten, fifteen minutes a day could be manageable and make progress on your stories. It’s easier to carve out a smaller amount of words if that’s all the time you have. You’d be surprised at how much you can actually get down in those minutes. Housework can take the same route if needed.

Organize Your Day.

It helps. It really does. Assigning a list of what you need to get done for the week helps you to focus better. You accomplish more and those checkoffs you do each day will make your positivity soar! I was a mess before I started scheduling things. At first, I did only writing. Now, I’ve moved on to adding chores that need done. It helps me to balance things and keep on steadily making progress. Now, there’s days that upend and I can’t get everything done but for the most part, I do. It’s like a little pat on the back for your efforts when you see what you’ve accomplished.

Leave the Stress at the Door.

Take care of your health and your family first. When all is said and done, that’s where your legacy truly lies. Not in how many books you got published. Not in how famous you became. It’s all about those who take the journey with you. They deserve attention, they deserve support. And, hopefully, by doing this, you’ll get it back. Your health is a priority because if you fall apart running yourself ragged, who will be there to pick up the threads? See your doctors regularly. Heed their advice. Follow your medication guidelines. In the end, it’ll make you go the distance.
