Writerly Things 10/8/17

Writerly Things…10/8/17

Traci Kenworth

Halloween month is always fun for me. Originally, I wanted to write scary stories but I’ve found over time that I’m more pulled to fantasy. There are scary elements to my stories and occasionally I do pen the full genre but I find I’m less drawn to it than previously. Maybe it was because I worked out a lot of darkness over the years in my early writing and now that I’m in a calmer place, my stories lend to the fantasy more.

I’m not saying I’ll never write scary again. I do love the genre! For now, though, my stories like just a shadow of scariness thrown in, sometimes a little more if I’m dealing with a battle or monster. Yes, monsters can be in fantasy too. Look at Lord of the Rings or even George R.R. Martin’s works. There’s something about that tad of creepiness that seeps into one’s work sometimes.

At home, we’re planning a Halloween marathon as we call it. We watch scary movies, eat some spooky food and treats, drink a little black punch… It’s all good. Do you have any Halloween plans this year? Do you write scary stories? What are your favorite scary movies? Books?

For movies, I like monsters better than psychos (too close to reality for me). A few: The Mummy movies (haven’t seen the new and don’t plan to), Jurassic Park movies, and Pirates of the Caribbean (the first movie). Books I like: The Stand, It, Salem’s Lot, Watchers, Lightning, Darkfall, Bethany’s Sin, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Haunting of Hill House, and Took.

Have a great week, take care, and God bless!

If I have to stop during the scene, I try and leave it off in a place that I’ll be motivated to go on from the next time I sit down to write. I usually think about the scene while I’m doing other daily things and work out my next move, this helps keep my Muse feeding me the story.

As a kid, I remember watching Wonder Woman and being awed that a woman could do the things she could. 3. https://stevelaube.com/researching-historical-novel/ Research is important to check your facts or your reader could check you. I try to do my best but sometimes you have to kind of guess when a date isn’t known. You can get it in the ballpark of certain events. For instance, the story I’m working on happens near the end of King David’s reign. I can’t pinpoint the exact date so I’ll try and note that the story may be off with facts. I have a good five-year span so I’m hoping things work out but I may get it wrong. Anyone else run into this problem?

Indie:

  1. https://teripolen.com/2017/09/04/the-authors-bookshelf-teri-polen-tpolen6/ Visit with Teri! Summer of Fear by Lois Duncan was one of my favorite books when younger.
  2. https://selfpublishingadvice.org/writing-can-you-change-from-pantser-to-plotter-and-should-you-try-case-study-with-kassandra-lamb/ I have lately changed from pantster to plotter. I did my last book as a plotter and it seemed to keep me from “wandering” too much during the story. Not that if something comes along when I’m writing I didn’t intend and works, I don’t run with it and change my plotting to align with it.

  3. https://www.janefriedman.com/creation-and-doubt/ Do you suffer from doubt? I know I do. I worry that my writing isn’t good enough. I hope to conquer this fear in the days ahead.
  4. http://blog.janicehardy.com/2017/09/choose-your-genre-change-your-world.html Do you consider the genre before you write a book? I pretty much know which genre I’ve set my story in though YA has a lot of different options within it. My adult romances are a little more defined.
  5. http://writershelpingwriters.net/2017/09/using-the-novel-journal-for-writing-breakthroughs/ I use what I call a bible. One for ideas then if the idea develops into a story, it gets a title and a bible all its own.
  6. http://authorkristenlamb.com/2017/09/the-art-of-story-seduction-from-spark-to-romance-climax-to-commitment/ This, I think explains what your story should bring to the reader: an experience like a date. Some good ones, some—not.
  7. http://writershelpingwriters.net/2017/09/introducing-the-occupation-thesaurus/ Writers help with different careers for characters. FABULOUS, FABULOUS idea, imo!
